Why go fishing?

Serious Anglers (fishermen) from around the world come to throw their lines in off the back of a boat and troll around the Pacific waters in search of Marlin, Sailfish and good eats. Why? Why the obsession with such a seemingly boring sport, asks the novice?

The local folk will explain that geographically we are only 9 degrees above the equator. Storms from the north are magnetically turned back at the 10 degree mark which means that the waters are the calmest around. Okay that sounds “nice” and yes, as a novice I would likely enjoy 2 foot swells versus 6 foot swells, helps keep the lunch down! So what else?

Well depending on the season, the waters off the coast of Jaco are teaming with a wide variety of fish life. Some of the fish that we pay a fortune for back home are more than happy to jump on the line and give you a good fight: Dorado, Tuna, Rooster Fish, Grouper, the list goes on! Pull them up and have the Mate filet it so that you enjoy fresh sashimi on board. Yep, fresh sushi is great,  but I still don’t see it.  Why the fuss?

Okay, so if being on the ocean in the beautiful sunshine, with the music playing, lines in the water, cold beer in hand, slathered in sunscreen, eating freshly caught sashimi doesn’t get you excited, maybe the "ZZZZIINNNGGG" of a line running out, the instant organized chaos in the cockpit (back of boat) as teasers are quickly brought in, the captain is shouting crisp orders and as you look out the back of the boat you see a fin... a really BIG fin. The Mate helps you put a “fishing belt” on and you feel the immediate pull from the other end as you take the rod. Excitement and adrenaline are pumping now and you begin to work the rod, with the helpful advice from the Mate. Suddenly the fish jumps, you see its whole torso and realize its HUGE!!!

Big, beautiful and shimmering purple, the captain yells that you’ve got a Sailfish on the line. Strong beyond belief, this beauty is not coming in without a fight. Just when you’ve got her beside the boat, she dives down and takes the line with her. Another 10 minutes getting her back in, your arm is throbbing, spectators are cheering you on as the sweat pours down your brow! Finally, finally you feel victory as this incredible beauty is brought along the side of the boat and you see for the first time, how truly big she really is.  175, 200, 350 lbs! The Mate reaches over and cuts the line and that big beautiful Sailfish, swims free….to be caught another day….to give a thrill to another novice or seasoned angler.

With pictures in hand, you sip an icy cold beer, momentarily exhausted, reveling in the past 20 minutes of thrills and excitement! "Aaaaaahhhhh" says the novice, I understand it now. There’s really nothing like it, nothing like the excitement of reeling in a really BIG fish and you’ll have the picture to remind you of your day on the ocean off the Costa Rican coast, where you caught not only your first Bill fish, but the sports fishing "bug".

We’ve got great captains and crews that man everything from a 25 foot panga boat up to a 60 foot yacht. Depending on the needs and wants of your party, we’ll match you up and set you on your way for a memory filled day at sea!

For those who like to try their luck with the bottom feeders, let us know as there are a couple of boats that exclusively offer both bill and bottom fishing. It’s a sure way to fill up the ice box as well as the barbecue come dinner time!

Don’t miss this adventure!

Sailfish

Perhaps the most acrobatic of all blue water fish, the Sailfish has engraved Costa Rica on every international anglers wish list. There's no wonder why some of the world's most esteemed billfish tournaments are held in Costa Rica.

The beautiful fish, spending more time in the air than in the water during the fight is not as powerful as the Marlin, but always spectacular. Double and triple hookups are not uncommon. February is the key month with the highest concentration of Sailfish and the possibility of 20 or 30 hookups a day. Year round availability of Sailfish make it a world leader for anglers.

Fishing Seasons in Costa Rica:

Fishing seasons in Costa Rica: mid-December to the end of April is rated the best fishing season, but the big schools often move in about October and stay longer. A few sails always show among the catch from June through September, mixed with other species that are found inshore during those months.

Marlin

Marlin are one of the most prized and sought after game fish in the world. Costa Rica is fortunate enough to have three different types of Marlin roaming its Pacific coast. One unique thing about Costa Rica is that Marlin can be taken any month of the year.

Fishing Pacific Blue Marlin: the most frequent of the Marlins taken here, three to five hundred pounders are frequently landed. Costa Rica has yet to see a grander, although several fish over 900 lbs have been taken and fish over 1000 lbs have been hooked and lost.

Fishing Black Marlin: also taken in the same waters. Several fish over 700 lbs. have been recorded and it has been reported that much larger fish have been hooked up.

Fishing Striped Marlin: the fish that those lucky enough to have taken grand slams in this country are looking for. These brilliant fighters average around 150 to 200 lbs.

Fishing Seasons in Costa Rica:

October is normally the top month for fishing Marlin in this area, but action is also good in September and November. Occasional Blue Marlin and the rare Black Marlin are likely to be found anytime of year.

Dorado

Also known as Dolphin fish or Mahi-Mahi, the Dorado is one of the most exciting fish to catch on light tackle. An extremely colorful fish, Dorado's are extremely fast swimmers. A hooked Dorado might leap or tail walk, first in one direction, then another.

It's been estimated that they can reach speeds of 50 mph (80 kmh) in short bursts. Look for them under trash lines that accumulate during the rainy season (roughly may to december). Schools of Dorado can become a nuisance for anglers looking for the larger Billfish lurking below the school. The Dorado is a delicious food fish.

Fishing Seasons in Costa Rica:

Dorado are taken on a regular basis all around the year, with the best fishing during the rainy season when the rivers deposit huge logs and other floating debris into the ocean.

Yellow Fin Tuna

In Costa Rica most anglers find Yellowfin Tuna, an extremely valuable commercial fish, esteemed for its very light flesh, but also valued as a sport fish.

This is one fish that you want to take back to the resort for the chef to prepare that evening. Yellowfin are usually around the size of a football but can reach up to 300 pounds and begin one of an anglers most spectacular fights. A Tuna must constantly swim and is one giant muscle.

Fishing Seasons in Costa Rica:

Yellowfin Tuna are found throughout the year as they are all along the Pacific coast, but most abundant from june to september.

Wahoo

The Wahoo is a loner and when traveling with other Wahoo it's usually only a school of five or six. The fish can be found anywhere in the ocean but does seem to concentrate during the summer off of Costa Rica's Pacific coast.

Considered a relatively rare species, the Wahoo is usually caught while the angler is looking for other oceanic species. That's always a nice surprise because many fisherman consider the Wahoo one of salt water's finest delicacies. Experts speculate that the Wahoo is the fastest fish in the ocean and it's no wonder that the first scorching run can burn out the drag on some reels.

Fishing Seasons in Costa Rica:

Wahoo abundant in South Pacific (Drake bay and Caños island area) from late june to early august

Roosterfish

Rooster Fish are one of the most sought after and exciting fishes of the inshore species that roam the entire west coast of Costa Rica. Averaging 15 to 20 pounds, forty pounders are common, and fish over 80 pounds have been taken in Costa Rican waters.

Volcanic rock outcrops are one of their favorite hangouts, but they also roam behind the surf lines and near the mouths of rivers that flow into the Pacific. There is no season that is better than another and roosters can be taken year round. A member of the jack family, they are edible but not considered a prime food fish.

Fishing Seasons in Costa Rica:

Roosterfish are available every month of the year. Best fishing period: from June up to early September.

Snapper

There are many species of Snapper. Each fish is a shallow water fish preferring a rocky bottom structure that provides bait fish and protection. The Cubera is the largest of the Snappers, often going beyond 100 pounds.

The Dog Snapper is the largest of the Pacific Snappers with the world record of 78 pounds held by a resort in Costa Rica. Each species will be a tough fighter, particularly on light tackle and although all Snapper are delicious eating the flesh of the larger fish can become course.

Fishing Seasons in Costa Rica:

Snapper are available every month of the year. Best fishing period: from June up to early September.

What are you fishing for?

Roosterfish

Roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis) is a game fish common in the waters of Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama.

The Roosterfish is distinguished by its rooster like dorsal fin. Roosterfish can reach over 4 feet in length and over one hundred pounds. The weight of the average fish hooked is about 20 pounds. Roosterfish are a popular game fish.

Marlin

Marlin, Istiophoridae, is a billfish with an elongated body, a spear-like bill, and a long rigid dorsal fin.

Marlin are incredibly fast swimmers, reaching speeds of approximately 68 mph which makes for a tremendous experience for anglers. The Marlin can grow to lengths of 15-19 feet in length and weigh up to 1,500 pounds. Getting a Marlin on-line can make for a tiresome and lengthy fight with an adrenaline rush to suit.

Wahoo

The Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) is a scombrid fish found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters.

The Wahoo is known to sports fishermen for its speed and high-quality flesh. It is commonly referred to as Peto by many Caribbean and Central Americans. In most parts of its range the Wahoo is a highly-prized catch. It reaches a good size, is often available in remote shoreline waters, and provides a mightly fight on light to medium fishing equipment & tackle. The Wahoo is famed among fisherman for the speed and strength of its first run. The aggressive habits make it a favorite catch.

Dolphin or Mahi-Mahi

The mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) is commonly known as dolphin-fish.

Found in off-shore waters, Mahi-Mahi live approximately 4 to 5 years. Catches average 15 to 29 pounds, and any Mahi-Mahi over 40 pounds is exceptional. Dolphin have a long dorsal fin that extends the entire length of their body. They have very distinct colors: golden on the sides, and bright blues and greens on the sides and back.

Mahi-Mahi are a highly sought after sport fish due to their beauty, size, food quality, and healthy population. 30-50 pound gear is ideal for trolling for Mahi-Mahi. Once on the line, mahi-mahi are fast, flashy and determined to get away.

Sailfish

Sailfish are two species of fish in the genus Istiophorus, living in warmer sections of the oceans.

Sailfish are blue and grey in color and have a distinct dorsal fin known as a sail, stretching the length of the back. Another distinct characteristic is the elongated bill, resembling that of the Marlin.

Sailfish grow to an average length of 4-5 feet in a single year and can swim at speeds of up to 70 mph. Sailfish generally do not grow to be more than 10 feet in length and rarely weigh over 200 lb. They are prized game fish and are known for their tremendous jumps.
